Middle East and North Africa Financial Action Task Force (MENAFATF) in cooperation with the World Gold Council (WGC) held a workshop today on the misuse of the gold sector for money laundering and terrorist financing.

The workshop was attended by nearly 200 participants, representing financial intelligence units, judicial authorities, law enforcement agencies, and supervisory bodies from member countries.

It aimed to discuss the main risks associated with the misuse of the gold sector, review best practices to promote integrity and transparency, and support member countries’ efforts in combating money laundering and terrorist financing. Discussions also focused on regulatory challenges, the importance of strengthening legal and institutional frameworks, and the role of public-private partnerships in addressing these risks.

The workshop concluded by emphasizing the importance of enhancing regional and international cooperation and exchanging experiences to support collective efforts in protecting this vital sector from illicit misuse.
